Wings (Asas) (2026)
“Wings” follows the journey of the women and children of a Ukrainian family as they flee the war and adapt to their new surroundings. At the heart of the film are sisters Veronika and Orysia, who endured a traumatic experience before fleeing their homeland. It was Veronika who helped organise the evacuation of several busloads of people to Portugal. However, her teenage sister, who has special needs, finds it difficult to adapt to school and her new environment. The family is grateful that they no longer wake up to the sound of bombs, but their hearts ache for the loved ones left behind in Ukraine.
They find a guardian angel in Bruna who made their escape from Ukraine possible in the first place. As she helps the family cope with both their day-to-day needs and larger concerns, she must navigate a maze of bureaucracy to find other than just temporary solutions for the refugees. The impact of the war and past traumas quietly seeps into everyday life, reminding us just how fragile a sense of security can be, even in a peaceful environment. The war in Ukraine rages on, but life must go on.
The film explores coping with trauma, rebuilding a sense of security, and the quest to return to normality in a situation where the aftermath of war makes it impossible to let go of the past.
