Sinfonietta Rīga and Olari Elts. Season’s Closing Concert

Conductor Olari Elts and Sinfonietta Rīga celebrates the closing of their first concert season together with Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony, joined by the sonorous voices of State Academic Choir Latvija and a magnificent selection of soloists. Across time it has been lauded as the artistic credo of the great master and his missive to the humankind. It has been described as the triumph of humanism and revolutionary artistic threshold. In it for the very first time the orchestral force of symphony is complemented by human voice that adds original textual message to the instrumental expression. Based on Beethoven’s compatriot Friedrich Schiller’s glorious and enigmatic Ode to Joy, it celebrates the brotherhood of all people. In May 1824, at its premiere in Vienna, the symphony was received rapturously, and it seems that the ovations that moved to tears the already-deaf composer who was conducting the performance himself, continue to reverberate through time and across borders. The vocal-symphonic masterpiece is tactfully accompanied by Marche funèbre by Luigi Cherubini who Beethoven one ardently declared the greatest composer of his era.
