Sin Sin Man. Solar return
70, 49, 23. What is the significance of these numbers? 70 and 23 are decades packed with passionate undertakings — exploring, working, dreaming, making, playing, adventuring. Yes, Ms. Sin Sin Man turns 70 this October. And Sin Sin Fine Art enters its 23rd year. How does one distill decades so full of energetic, productive life? Populated with art, beauty, and friendship. Charged with challenges, setbacks, and victories big and small. The number 49. This is what Sin Sin arrived at, intuitively. Without conscious planning, day in and day out, she worked on her new body of work — a meditative rhythm growing naturally as she developed her own unique technique. It is labour-intensive, crafted entirely by hand: meticulous, endless pleats, layer upon layer of paint. Even colour came to her intuitively, driven by a ferocious hunger. By the time she decided the work was done, she counted what she had made. There were 49 pieces — small, yet sculptural. In the I Ching, an ancient Chinese philosophy, 49 is the number of active yarrow stalks used in traditional divination, and it corresponds to Hexagram 49 — Ge (革), “Molting,” or “Revolution.” The hexagram pairs the trigram for Lake above Fire below: water and fire acting upon one another, destroying and transforming in turn. It describes a boiling point, a moment when old structures must give way. Like an animal shedding its skin, it marks a natural cycle — releasing the old to make room for necessary, profound renewal. At once, Sin Sin realised that the concept of 49 — Ge (革) is what she’s been working on all along. What a fitting concept for Sin Sin, who has never stopped courageously remaking herself. Through every challenge, she has grown steadier, more assured — mastering her materials, mastering her technique — and yet she remains open, unguarded, ready to change again. Mastery, for her, has never meant settling. Sin Sin contains multitudes. She moves through many modes, each entirely her own — playful, in the exuberance of her new colour work; restless, even in black and white. Her latest pieces seem simple at a glance. Look closer, though, and there’s depth, intensity, a pulse beneath the surface. Quiet. Concentrated. Waiting. Solar return.
