Koji Yakusho was already a star in 1996, but Suo Masayuki’s global breakout hit made him a household name and crowned him with numerous accolades. Revealing a gentler, more down-to-earth side of its usually intense star, this delightful modern classic follows a bored salaryman who takes up ballroom dancing on a whim. Through his friendship with his eccentric classmates, he realises that dancing was what he needed to escape his ennui. Yakusho’s adorably awkward yet charming character epitomised a whole generation of strong, silent men who could all use a little ballroom dancing in their lives.

杉山邁入男人四十，事業家庭皆穩定，買了房子的他令人稱羨，壓力卻只有自己知。某日下班乘電車經過舞蹈教室，被舞蹈老師憑窗眺望的倩影深深吸引。他瞞住妻兒去學社交舞，本來只抱著非份之想，不料越跳越投入，枯燥的生活從此泛起漣漪。本片是役所廣司演藝生涯的重大突破︰接演時，他被質疑欠缺票房號召力；電影上映後，他躍升為日本最炙手可熱的男星。役所廣司用三個月練成翩翩舞姿，溫和內歛的上班族形象成功引起共鳴，橫掃多個男主角獎。本片更創下13座日本電影學院獎的空前大滿貫，亦創下百老匯電影中心單院上映突破200萬票房，紀錄保留至今。
