Catherine Couturier Gallery presents Henry Horenstein’s Miles and miles of Texas. This series, published in an eponymous book in 2025 by Honky Tonk Editions, explores the people and culture of Texas through the eyes of Horenstein, a Bostonian fascinated with the Lone Star State from a young age. From the TV series Davy Crockett to balladeers like Marty Robbins, Texan culture has left an indelible mark, shining brightly in the imaginations of folks the world over. “Miles and miles of Texas is a personal nod to Lone Star culture, history, landscape, and most of all the people I met along the way-“some of the friendliest people you’ll ever see” (“It’s a Texas thing,” Gary P. Nunn). And while I nodded, I got to eat some tasty barbecue, listen to inspired music, hear some heartfelt and hilarious stories, and drink a lot of cold beer. Plus, I got to make pictures I like and put them down into this book.” – Henry Horenstein The exhibition will be accompanied by screenings of Horenstein’s short film Spoke, an homage to the rich culture of Texas dance halls. Henry Horenstein studied history at the University of Chicago and earned his BFA and MFA at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he studied with legends Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. His work is collected and exhibited internationally and he has published over 40 books, including several monographs of his own work such as Miles and miles of Texas, Honky Tonk, Histories, Show, Animalia, Humans, Racing days, Close relations, and many others. He has also authored Black and white photography, Digital photography, and Beyond basic photography, used by hundreds of thousands of college, university, high-school, and art school students as their introduction to photography. His Shoot what you love serves both as a memoir and a personal history of photography over the past 50 years. His recent monographs, Speedway 1972 was published by Stanley/Barker (UK) in 2022 and We sort of people was published by Kehrer Verlag (Ger) in 2023. His newest book, Miles and miles of Texas, was published by Honky Tonk Editions in 2025. In recent years, Horenstein has been making films: Marksville, Murray, Spoke, Partners, and Blitto underground. He is currently in production on Preacher 1996: the lost footage, a film about rockabilly musician Preacher Jack. Horenstein is professor of photography at RISD and lives in Boston.
