Miķeļi – Autumn Harvest Festival and Market

In the Latvian seasonal calendar, Miķeļi marks the autumn equinox, when day and night are once again of equal length. In Latvian folklore, the festival is also known as Apjumības, celebrating the completion of the grain harvest. According to ancient belief, Jumis is the spirit of fertility believed to dwell in every grain field. For generations, Jumis has held an important place in the lives of Latvian farmers, inspiring a rich tradition of customs and rituals. One of the most significant is the “Catching Jumis” ritual, performed to ensure fertile fields and an abundant harvest in the year to come.

Visitors are warmly invited to explore the Miķeļi Market, experience ancient harvest traditions, enjoy a hearty autumn harvest soup, and take part in a wide range of activities for both children and adults.

The Miķeļi Market is traditionally the richest market of the year, showcasing the abundance of the autumn harvest. Throughout the day, more than 60 Latvian artisans and artisan food producers will present their handmade crafts and seasonal delicacies.

Visitors can browse beautifully woven baskets, warm knitted garments, handmade jewellery, ceramics, wooden crafts, and textile products, alongside a rich selection of locally produced food. Artisan producers will offer freshly baked bread, cheeses, smoked meats, delicious pastries and cakes, homemade sauces, local honey, as well as a wide variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and other harvest treasures.
