In 1950s Hungary, János is imprisoned on political charges. Unable to tell his bedridden mother the truth, his wife Luca forges cheerful letters claiming he is directing films in America. Stripped of her teaching job, Luca quietly sells their belongings to sustain their lives under political isolation. Using black-and-white cinematography and stream-of-consciousness editing, Hungarian New Wave master Károly Makk depicts love and endurance under totalitarian rule. Winner of the 1971 Cannes Jury Prize, it is hailed as a cinematic masterpiece.
