Exhibition “Who is Afraid of Motherhood?”
This exhibition at Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn is based on the belief that motherhood is, on the one hand, a very personal experience, but, on the other hand, is always influenced and framed by the fact that it is also an institution largely shaped by a world functioning on unequal grounds. At the center of the exhibition is the tension between personal and social life and the question of how motherhood could be something that helps imagine and create a more caring society.
At the exhibition, various aspects of motherhood, a very broad and complex theme, are revealed through works mostly based on personal experiences. The main motif framing the exhibition is fear. Artists point out, analyze, and interpret fears related to parenting, expressing confusion or confronting the roots of fear: these are often societal mentalities, contradictions, and the lack of solidarity and care.
