Hong Kong, 1960. A sweltering hot summer. York (Leslie Cheung), an amoral disillusioned and cruel young man is kept in luxury by his foster mother, a retired courtesan, who gives him everything but the one thing he needs to know – the identity of his natural mother. A self-obsessed man, desperately seeking his true identity, York plays carelessly with his lovers, a lonely submissive bargirl (Maggie Cheung) and a beautiful club dancer (Carina Lau) and his friends, before leaving them all for the Philippines in search of the truth that has been denied, and may ultimately destroy him.

旭仔（張國榮飾）是香港六十年代一個反叛青年，渴望高飛，卻只做著風流浪子。一天借買汽水挑逗賣汽水的蘇麗珍（張曼玉飾）；同居後因她要結婚便分手。之後邂逅艷舞女郎（劉嘉玲飾），用耳環誘她返家。歪仔（張學友飾）半夜潛入旭仔家，撞見艷舞女郎，遂成心中女神。蘇麗珍想委曲求全，重回旭仔身邊遭拒，向巡夜的警察超仔（劉德華飾）傾訴。旭仔因養母拒告生母所在，故意常與她作對，後獲知生母在菲律賓，前往尋根，卻遭拒絕不獲一見生母。
