Suzhou River (bc30)

Set along the bustle of Shanghai’s Suzhou River, Lou Ye’s neo-noir thriller recalls the dark romance and fascinating mystery of Vertigo. The girlfriend of the film’s unseen narrator, coy club performer Meimei attracts the attention of ex-con Mardar, who once loved and betrayed a girl named Moudan. Now out of jail, he searches restlessly for Moudan, and encounters her doppelganger in Meimei. An edgy, elusive mix of gritty realism and urban romanticism, Lou’s breakout feature launched him to international renown. bc also welcomed a young Zhou Xun in person for the film that would define her career.
