Mikkel and Louise take their daughters on an all-inclusive holiday to Gran Canaria, hoping simply to escape the pressures of everyday life. Yet beyond the resort’s carefree bubble lies another reality: thousands of migrants are arriving on the island by sea in search of a better life. When the family meets Ahmad, an Afghan man, in unexpected circumstances, their efforts to help draw them into the deeper conflicts unfolding on the island. Soon they must ask themselves how much they are truly willing to risk to help a stranger. A tense moral drama, The Last Resort lays bare questions of privilege and responsibility in the face of the migration crisis. It won the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film at the Göteborg Film Festival.

Maria Sødahl
Norwegian director Maria Sødahl was born in 1965 and graduated from the National Film School of Denmark in 1993. She went on to write and direct several documentaries, short films and television dramas. Her debut feature, Limbo, was presented at Scanorama in 2011. Her second feature, Hope (2019), drew on her own experience of facing a life-threatening illness alongside her husband, filmmaker Hans Petter Moland.
