Plan 75

In a near-future Japan, government programme Plan 75 encourages senior citizens to be voluntarily euthanized to remedy a super-aged society. After being laid off due to her age, an elderly woman considers joining the program. Surrounding her is a governmental structure built to enact the program. Inside, a young civil servant gently recruits candidate, a hotline counsellor listens patiently to the final words of the elderly, and a Filipino laborer tidies the left-behind belongings of the deceased. Within this closed loop of life, everyone is trying their best to survive, yet the threat of death looms closer, awaiting chance to devour the life of elderly. The debut feature of Chie Hayakawa points to the imminent social issue of ageing population, contemplating the weight of life. Cannes Camera d’Or Special Mention.
