Inta Ruka’s Places Called Home

Photographer Inta Ruka photographed people in her homeland of Latvia from 1983 to 2008, capturing their lives in rooms, yards, and streets — places where everyday life unfolds. She returned to the same people repeatedly, working slowly and allowing trust to develop over time. Thus, the photos were created that are not merely documentary but capture places, relationships, and lived life, from which a sense of belonging emerges.
Inta Ruka (1958, Riga) started photography at a young age without undergoing professional training, driven by a strong curiosity about the people around her. The camera became her way of meeting the world. Ruka’s photos are not romanticized; they are straightforward, intimate, and respectful.
